Ma Ke: Preludes and Meditaions

2024.06.22-2024.09.08

The opening of "Ma Ke: Preludes and Meditations" at TAG Art Museum!

On 23rd June, Ma Ke's solo exhibition "Preludes and Meditations" opened at TAG Art Museum. The exhibition is a retrospective of Ma Ke's creative journey over the past thirty years, and is also his largest mid-term review to date.

The exhibition features more than 130 works created by Ma Ke since 1997, including paintings, paperbacks, manuscripts, archives, and documentaries. Divided into nine units, the exhibition weaves narratives into the two floors of the museum‘s exhibition space, presenting the artist's creations from different perspectives.

The scattered exhibition walls in the exhibition space often make several artworks under the same theme glance at each other, which is not only the artist's rewriting of traditional texts, such as Blind Man's Feeling or Journey to the West, but also the artist's attempt to find more possibilities in the repetition.

Hall 6 on the upper floor is divided into three spaces, unfolding slices of Ma Ke's different creative periods, as if the audience enters into a montage of time and space one after another, and this non-linear narrative of the exhibition echoes the concept of "folding space and time" in Ma Ke's creations. The windows facing the sea in Hall 7 and the "Transformation of Landscape" mirror each other, creating a great poetic and philosophical idea of " Man is far away and the world is near".

"Ma Ke: Preludes and Meditations" opening lecture

On the opening day, artist Ma Ke, curator Cui Cancan, and philosopher and scholar Wang Min'an, professor at Tsinghua University's School of Humanities, held a lecture on the exhibition's self-titled theme - Preludes and Meditations - centred on Ma Ke's creations of the last 30 years.

In the course of the conversation, we got closer to the relationship between the artist's personal experience and his creation. The "Journey to the West Series" is Ma Ke's "rewriting" of the traditional Chinese novel "Journey to the West", which responds to the long interaction between East and West in the great history, and becomes a reflection of Ma Ke's personal experience.

Inspired by his father's art in the 80's, influenced by the Su School in Tianjin in the 90's, impressed by the primitive rhythm of life when he was teaching in Africa, and returning to China in 2000, Ma Ke spent five years travelling to Chinese monuments and gained a first-hand experience of traditional culture. And this echoes what the artist says, "The bigger the world you enter, the more concrete you become".

Professor Wang Min'an also shared his feelings about the exhibition, which is the first time that he has systematically viewed the whole picture of Ma Ke's thirty-year creative journey. Regarding the degree of participation of different styles and coordinate systems in Ma Ke's creation, Professor Wang Min'an said, "It is very difficult for an artist to stay outside the tradition of painting, and every genre lives in the body of the artist. For Ma Ke's creations, besides the distinctive shadow of Cubism, there are also the colours of Surrealism, and the charm of this kind of painting lies in the drama composed of the conflict and turbulence between the various elements of the painting, and all of Ma Ke's paintings have the feeling of a dream world, a kind of unreality, and some of the unreality doesn't lead to the dream world, whereas Ma Ke's unreality leads to the dream world".

The dialogue also discusses "Infinite Painting", which is the opening chapter of the exhibition and the spiritual metaphor of the whole exhibition. It transcends the differences of time and reality, and presents us the common work implied in all of Ma Ke's periods, the pivot point that has always been the core driving force of creation: how to reach the infinite space of painting in the future.

Compared to previous retrospective exhibitions, the theme of the exhibition, "Preludes", attempts to give another layer of temporal meaning to the act of "retrospection", from the contemplation of what has already been achieved to the future of the artist, in anticipation of the coming of the next moment.

The exhibition will run until 8 September 2024.
